Well, they are miniatures. They are about battle (in the future). But they have magnets! And they are awesome! No dice rolling needed as the good obviously will beat the bad. I am talking about STARCOM.
Starcom. Amazing toys. They did poorly in North America but well enough for 2 production runs for Europe and Asia in the 1980s. My progeny found my old stuff when over at her grandparents. Magnets, clockwork, sliding doors that work, non-exaggerated details. I love it! She loves it. They (and a diecast B1B and SR71) are her favourite toys now.
I never got, nor do I still, the keep it in a package thing when you buy a toy, but I am a little more sympathetic now. I find myself sorely tempted to buy some “new in box/packaging” versions of Starcom stuff in order to get toys in working order. I didn’t used to understand paying a huge amount for mass produced vintage toys. That said, I am now seriously considering paying some significant sums of money to get my old toys working. I attribute this to these being objectively better toys… but maybe there is also some nostalgia.
Anyway, a little trip down memory lane. Next, a play report!
